I use my garbage disposal every day. I always use it to get rid of food that is left on the plates after meals. The other day I was having a small dinner party with some close friends. As always, I went to clean up the dishes before I served dessert when suddenly my garbage disposal would not turn on. I ended up having to put all of the food scraps into the regular garbage which almost instantly made me entire home smell bad. Can your residential plumbers please give me some advice on what may have gone wrong with my garbage disposal? I really do not want my house smelling bad and taking the trash out every single day anymore.

Dear Disposal Misuser,

This happens to many people because they are not using their garbage disposal properly. You may not realize this, but there are actually foods that you should not put down your garbage disposal. If you have been putting everything down your garbage disposal then you may have clogged the blades or even broken one or more of them causing it to no longer work. Let us explain to you the proper way to use your garbage disposal so that the likely hood of this ever happening again is very low.

First off, let us go over with you the types of foods that you should not put down your garbage disposal. The first types of food you want to keep out of the disposal are hard foods. This includes bones or pits from fruits. These objects are much too hard for the disposal blades to handle. They will not be able to break them up and may cause one of the blades to break or be damaged. The second types of food you want to stay away from is anything starchy or stringy. These things include grease, pasta, or stringy vegetables such as celery or potato skins. All of these things will cause your garbage disposal to clog. The blades will be able to chop the food up, but they will all leave a residue on the blades. This residue will cover the blades and they will no longer be able to chop food like they should. This residue can also clog the blades so much that they will not be able to move the way they need to.

Now that you know the types of foods that should not go down your disposal, let us quickly go over how to dispose of the correct foods the right way. When you are using your garbage disposal with say boneless meat you should always make sure that you have cold water on. Cold water will help the food go down the disposal much easier. Also, make sure that the water stays on the entire time the disposal is turned on. You should wait until you hear a low purring sound to turn the disposal off.

Hopefully these pointers have helped and you will not have to worry about your garbage disposal not working again. If you need advise on plumbing services then contact your local plumber.
